TITLE: The Effect Of Different Kinds Of Plant Food On The Growth Of Tomato Plants. STUDENT RESEARCHER: Chris Viens SCHOOL ADDRESS: Great Falls Middle School, Montague, MA GRADE: 7 TEACHER: Mr. Kenney 1. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS: I wanted to know the growth difference in plants when different plant foods were being fed to them. I believed that if I used Miracle-Gro the plants would grow taller than the others, I believed this because Miracle-Gro seems to be the most popular nationally known plant food in the United States of America. I hoped that this investigation would tell me what plant food makes plants grow the fastest. 11. METHODOLOGY: To see if my belief was correct, l got 9 identical Jiffy Peat Pots that were 3 1/8in. tall, Agway professional mix potting -soil, Miracle-Gro for tomatoes and Shultz-Instant all purpose plant food for house plants, roses, tomatoes and flowers, 3 1 gal. milk jugs, 1/4 cup and 112 tbs. measuring spoons, a 16 5/8 x 13 1/2 piece of glass, Agway celebrity tomato seeds, 3 Tupperware containers, 1 pen and a fluorescent light. After I got all of those things, I marked 3 pots with an M, 3 with an S and 3 with a W, those stand for Miracle-Gro, Shultz-Instant and water. Then I filled each pot with 3/4 cup of potting soil. I put 3 seeds in each cup and covered the seeds with 1/4 in. of soil. Next I filled each milk jug 3/4 in. from the top with water. I put 1/4 tsp. (recommended amount) of Shultz-Instant in one jug of water and shook it well (1/4 tsp. comes with the plant food). I put 1 tbs.(recommended amount) of Miracle-Gro in one jug of water and shook it well(l tbs. comes with the plant food). I filled each Tupperware container 1/2 way with 1 of the 3 plant foods and water mixture ( keep it 1/2 way full, that makes it easier to measure the 3 liquids). I gave each pot 2 tbs. what the letter that I wrote on the pot stands for. I then put the glass on top of the pots (this creates a green house effect). Once the plants have grown about 1/4 in. out of the soil, I took the g ass off the pots and didn't put it back on. I put the plants by a window that has a lot of sunlight coming through. Then I put a fluorescent light over the plants and turned it on. At night I turned the light off and in the morning turned it on. I watered the plants everyday until the investigation is over. 111. ANALYSIS OF DATA: I found that the plants that were being watered with water were the first plants to sprout. They were also the tallest until about the second week of the investigation when the plants that were being watered with Miracle-Gro and Shultz-Instant began to grow very rapidly. IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: I found that the average of the plants that were watered with Shultz-Instant was 3.3 in. The average of the Miracle-Gro watered plants were 3 in. and the plants that were watered with plain water came out to 1.5 in. From what this data tells me my hypothesis was clearly rejected. V. APPLICATION: Now that I have completed this investigation, people will know what plant food to use if they want their plants to grow quickly.
TITLE: The Effect of Different Human Sounds on the Height of Bean Plants. STUDENT RESEARCHER: Danielle Brown SCHOOL ADDRESS: Great Falls Middle School, Montague, MA GRADE: 7 TEACHER: Mr. Kenney 1. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS: I wanted to find out if different human sounds had an effect on the height of bean plants. My hypothesis stated that if I use different human sounds, then the plants that I breathed upon would grow the highest. II. METHODOLOGY: First, I gathered all my materials. I used bean seeds, potting soil, water, a watering can, a 1 Cup measuring cup, a 1/4 Cup measuring cup, 4 pie plates, and a place to record information. Then, I numbered the plates 1 though 4. 1 next put 3 cups of soil and 5 seeds in each pot. Then, I watered each plate with 1/4 cup of water. Finally, I took plate number 1 into another room, and sang to it. I continued to take the other plants one by one into the room, and I talked, whistled and breathed upon the other plants. I then recorded my data. III. ANALYSIS OF DATA: Of my twenty trials, 1 3 of the bean plants sprouted. After averaging the heights of my plants, I found that the plants I sang to grew the highest, at an average height of 29.5 centimeters, followed by the plants that had been breathed upon at 27.6 centimeters, the plants I talked to had an average of 24.3 centimeters, and finally the plants I whistled to, at a height of 23.4 centimeters. The most plants sprouted in the plate of plants I breathed upon, thus dropping the average height way down. IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: From my investigation, I found that plants that are sung to and breathed upon grow higher than plants spoken to or whistled to. Because of the odd averaging, I am not accepting or rejecting my hypothesis. V. APPLICATION: Now, because I have learned that bean plants grow highest when sung to and breathed upon, I will sing to bean plants while they are growing. This will help gardeners grow higher plants.
TITLE: The effect of different types of music on the growth of bean plants. STUDENT RESEARCHER: Ashley Rau SCHOOL ADDRESS: Great Falls Middle School, Montague, MA GRADE: 7 TEACHER: Mr. Kenney 1. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS: My topic is: how much bean plants would grow with different types of music. The different types of music are classical, the Beatles, and Listener's Choice Sparkling Springtime. I did not playing any music to one group of 3 bean plants. I wanted to find out if the bean plants would grow faster, with music, and if they did, what kind of music. I wanted to find out more about classical music on the growth of bean plants. My hypothesis was that bean plants that I played classical music to would grow faster. 11. METHODOLOGY: The materials I needed were: 12 pots, 1 bag of beans, soil, water, different types of music, and the same amount of sunlight. The steps to my investigation were: STEP 1. Plant 3 beans in all the containers with soil, label the containers with Classical, Rock, Nature Sounds, and one group of pots which you play no music to. There are 3 pots in each group. STEP 2. Put the plants in a spot where there is usually the most sunlight in the house. STEP 3. Water each bean plant with 1/4 cups of cold water. STEP 4. Every day play 1 hour of Classical, Rock, and Nature Sounds to each group of 3 plants. 3 out of 12 plants do not play any music to. STEP 5. When done with the project measure and record the height of the bean plants. STEP 6. when you have the height of all the bean plants you will then have to average them out. With that information you will be able to find out which group of plants grew faster, and with which kind of music or no music at all. 3. ANALYSIS OF DATA: The data that I collected in my research project indicated that playing Classical music to the group of bean plants made them grow faster. Rock music averaged out to 1 ft. 5 in. Listeners Choice Sparkling Springtime [ Nature ] grew 1 ft. 4 1/2 in. When I played no music at all to the group of bean plants they only grew the average if 1 ft. 2 in. 4. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: My hypothesis was that the bean plants that I play Classical music to would grow faster. The data that I have collected as you have read supported my hypothesis. 5. APPLICATION: My research that I have collected will help people if they want to grow bean plants faster, or if they have to have them in a hurry. I hope that my research will help somebody some day.
TITLE: The Effect of Different Amounts of Light on how Tall the Basil Plants Grow. STUDENT RESEARCHER: Heidi Boliski GRADE: 7 SCHOOL: Great Falls Middle School, Montague, MA TEACHER: Mr. Kenney I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS: I wanted to do a research project to see if different amounts of light would affect the growth of basil. My hypothesis was that the plants with the bright light would grow the tallest. II. METHODOLOGY: First, l took 14 pots and put about 4 seeds in each pot. Next, I put 7 pots in each room. Then every other day I put about 1/4 cup water in each pot. 111. ANALYSIS OF DATA: I found that, the basil in the light room grew the most. The basil in the dark room didn't grow at all. IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: In my study, I found that all of the plants in the lighted room grew. They all sprouted in about 5-6 days. My hypothesis was supported by my data. V. APPLICATION: Now that I know the basil grows in the light, we will know not to plant the basil or any plants in the dark.
TITLE: The Effect of Different Kinds of Light on How High the Bean Plants Will Grow. STUDENT RESEARCHER: Ben Holden SCHOOL: Great Falls Middle School, Montague, MA GRADE: 7 TEACHER: Mr. Kenney 1. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS: I wanted to know the effect of natural light and artificial light on the growth of bean plants. 11. METHODOLOGY: First I got the following materials: thirty seeds, water, soil and pots. After I filled the pots with soil I planted the seeds in the soil and watered the seeds. Then I let the plants grow for 24 days and measured the plants on a regular basis. Then I collected my data and wrote it down. 111. ANALYSIS OF DATA: I planted the seeds on March 6, 1996. Only two of the plants sprouted out of six flats with thirty seeds. The two plants sprouted on March 9, 1996. On March 18, 1 put plant A under artificial light and plant B in the window. On March 21, both plants measured nine inches. On March 27, plant A measured 12 inches and plant B measured 13 1/2 inches. On April 1, both plants measured 14 inches. On April 4, plant A measured 14 inches and plant B measured 17 114 inches. Also, both plants blossomed and produced beans. My hypothesis was if I grow a plant in natural light it will grow taller than a plant grown in artificial light. My hypothesis was supported but the plant grown in artificial light had more leaves and was healthier. The plant grown in natural light did not get enough light through the window. But if it was grown outside the plant would have gotten more light. Twenty-eight seeds did not sprout probably because the soil was too cold. IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: In my study on bean plants, I found that bean plants grown under natural light grow taller than bean plants grown under artificial light, but not as healthy. The bean plant grown under artificial light was healthier and had more leaves and blossoms, but it was not as tall. V. APPLICATION: Bean plants grown in the winter grow better in artificial light than bean plants grown in natural light in a window. If you want to grow healthy plants during the winter, you should grow them under lights.
TITLE: The Effect of the Number of Leaves on the Development of Roots on Geranium Cuttings. STUDENT RESEARCHER: Jonathon Caswell School Address: Great Falls Middle School, Montague, MA GRADE: 7 TEACHER: Mr. Kenney 1. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS: I wanted to do this investigation because I wanted to find out what would be better, one, two, three, four or five leaves in root development on geranium cuttings. My hypothesis stated that if the cuttings had more leaves, then the roots would be longer. 11. METHODOLOGY: First Mr. Kenny and I got two, twelve by nine inch tubs. Then we filled the tubs evenly with three or four inches of moistened sand. Next we made cuttings of the geranium plants. We made cuttings with zero through five leaves on the cuttings. Last, but not least, we kept the temperature of the water, the amount of water and the amount of sand and light constant. Finally, we planted them and let them grow for about a month. Then we measured the roots. 111. ANALYSIS OF DATA: The data showed that cuttings with three leaves are more apt to live and produce good roots. Although my hypothesis did not prevail, the research showed that my hypothesis was closer that expected. I expected that cuttings with a lot of leaves would produce the best and longest roots. The research showed that cuttings with zero and one leaf died. One cutting with two leaves and one cutting with five leaves lived. IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: I found out that the cuttings with three leaves did the best; almost all the other cuttings died. For some reason, three leaves seems to be the best amount of leaves to produce good roots on geraniums. I reject my hypothesis because my research showed that it was wrong. V. APPLICATION: This investigation tells people that it would be better to have three leaves on geranium cuttings because cuttings with three leaves had the best root development and were the healthiest of all the other cuttings.
TITLE: The Effect of Different Amounts of Water on how High Marigolds Will Grow. STUDENT RESEARCHER: Samantha Corey GRADE: 7 SCHOOL: Great Falls Middle School, Montague, MA TEACHER: Mr. Kenney 1. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS: I wanted to do a research project on this topic to find out if different amounts of water would effect the growth of Marigolds. II. METHODOLOGY: First I took 4 pots and put 3 seeds in each pot. Next I put 1 and 1/2 cups of soil into the pots. Then I put the pots with the flowers in a window so they could get some sun light. Every other day I watered them, putting 1/2 cup of water in 2 of the 4 pots and then in the other 2 pots I put 1/4 cup of water. 111. ANALYSIS OF DATA: I found that when I gave the plants 1/2 cup of water it seemed to drown the plants, and they didn't grow at all. When I gave the plants 1/4 cup of water, it still seemed to drown them a little bit but at least they still grew about 1/2 inches tall. IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: Next time that I do this investigation I will use less water to see if they grow taller and I'll put them in a place other than in a window, so I can see if the coldness of the weather out side leaking in through the window had any thing to do with them not growing. V. APPLICATION:
TITLE: 'The Effect of Different Types of Music on the Height of Tomato Plants., STUDENT RESEARCHER: Jesse Mayhew SCHOOL: Great Falls Middle School, Montague, MA GRADE: 7 TEACHER: Mr. Kenney 1. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS: The object of this experiment was to see if music would affect the rate of growth of the tomato plant and to see if different kinds of music would make a difference in height , length, or health.. People sometimes talk to their plants and they think it helps them grow. We know plants do not have ears but they may have the ability to sense vibrations and be affected by them. They say playing classical music for infants can increase their intelligence later in life so it does not seem that far fetched that plants could benefit from music. It was my hypothesis that classical music would be most beneficial for the plants. II. METHODOLOGY In this experiment nine peat moss containers of the same size were filled with potting soil from the same bag. One seed from the same seed packet was planted in each container at the same depth on the same day. The plants were watered with the same amount of water at the same time every day and share the same sunny spot. All aspects of the way the plants were treated were consistent except for one hour each evening. Plants in each group were identified as A,B & C. Every evening three of the plants were put on the 3rd floor of the house right next to the speakers of a CD player and -a rock music tape was played for the plant (Arrowsmith's Get a Grip). Three of the plants were put in a room on the 2nd floor where there was no sound. The three remaining-plants were kept on the first floor and put right next to the speakers of a CD player where classical music was played for them (Handel Messiah.). After one hour the plants were returned to their usual sunny window. This ritual was repeated every night, always putting the same plants in the same location and playing the same music. I made extra care that the volume was the same level even though the tapes were played on different systems and that the plants were kept the same length away from the speakers. ANALYSIS OF DATA: I labeled the three different groups as follows. 1 Rock group, 2 Classical group & 3, Control group. It was hard to tell at the end of my investigation which plants were better off since they had just gotten out of the germination process and were very small but I attempted to measure them and these are my findings: Averaging out the three plants of each group, classical scored the highest with a 2.9cm average. Control an rock then tied at 2.3 cm average. The appearance of the plants in the rock group, was less uniform, but this could just be incidental. ,Without repeating the experiment, and without a larger sampling, perhaps no conclusion should be drawn from this. IV: SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: All the data I've gathered thus far points to the idea that tomato plants prefer classic music to-rock or silence. Hence my hypothesis that the classical music would be go for them is supported. V. APPLICATION: Now that we know classical music helps tomato plants and possibly other plants grow we can play it in greenhouses and grow giant tomatoes to help end world hunger!!!'
TITLE: The Effect of Different Directions of Light on How Much Plants Grow in one Month. STUDENT RESEARCHER: Greg Brenner SCHOOL: Great Falls Middle School, Montague, MA GRADE: 7 TEACHER: Mr. Kenney 1. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS: I wanted to see if plants grew better when facing a specific direction. I also wanted t see which direction would make the plants grow the tallest. I thought they would grow best when facing the West because they should get more direct sunlight from that direction. 11. METHODOLOGY: I put four plants (a sunflower, a tomato, a sugar snap pea, and a cucumber) on four different window sills. Each window sill faced a different direction ( north, south, east or west). Every other day I checked to see if they needed water. I gave them a dose of fertilizer (the same amount) once during the month. I photographed them at four times during the experiment to record their progress. I measured them at the end of the experiment. Ill. ANALYSIS OF DATA: The sugar snap peas grew the tallest. The cucumber grew the second tallest. Next was the tomato plant. In last were the sunflowers because they got a disease and eventually they all died. IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: My hypothesis was supported. The plants grew tallest when facing the West. V. APPLICATION: If people want to grow good plants living on window sills they should grow them facing towards the West.
