Botany Science Fair Project

Pea Disease in Central Washington

Medium
Pea Disease in Central Washington | Science Fair Projects | STEM Projects
We're going to investigate how diseases affect pea plants in Central Washington. We'll collect soil samples, plant pea seeds, and observe the plants to see what diseases are present.

Hypothesis

The hypothesis is that the less diseases that are in the soil, the better the pea plants will grow.

Method & Materials

You will gather soil samples, put them in pots, plant 10 seeds in each pot, water the pots, and observe the plants for signs of disease.
You will need 14 flower pots, 14 plastic bags for soil samples, 1 watering can, and 140 pea seeds.

Results

The results showed that the plants with the most diseases were close to being dead, or completely dead. The most common and most major disease in the pea plants was Fusarium Wilt. An interesting observation was that Fusarium Wilt was in 37% of the plants and Rhizoctonia was in 32%.

Why do this project?

This science project is interesting because it shows how diseases can affect the growth of pea plants and how to identify the most common diseases.

Also Consider

Variations to consider include testing other plants to see if there is a disease common to all of them, and testing different soil samples to see if the results are different.
