Finding Your Blind Spot
Medium
Have you ever noticed that when you look at something, you can't see everything? That's because your eye has a blind spot. In this project, you'll explore the blind spot in your vision and learn how to find it!
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that the eye has a blind spot that can be found by using a card and a meterstick.
Method & Materials
You will mark a dot and a cross on a card, hold the card at eye level, close one eye and look directly at the cross with the other eye, and slowly bring the card toward your face.
You will need a 3 X 5 inch (8 x 13 cm) card or other stiff paper and a meterstick.
Results
Through this experiment, you can observe that when the dot falls on the blind spot, it disappears and reappears as you bring the card closer to your face. Additionally, when the dot disappears, the line appears to be continuous, without a gap where the dot used to be.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting because it allows you to explore the blind spot in your vision and learn how to find it.
Also Consider
Experiment variations to consider include rotating the card so that the dot and cross are not directly across from each other, and drawing a straight line across the card from one edge to the other, through the center of the cross and the dot.
