Generating Sparks
Easy
Have you ever wanted to make sparks with static electricity? Now you can! In this experiment, you'll create an object called an electrophorus and use it to generate sparks.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that static electricity can be used to create sparks.
Method & Materials
You will remove the pen cartridge from a BIC pen, push a thumbtack through a pie pan, coat the thumbtack point with hot glue, and press the bottom of the pen body onto the thumbtack. You will then rub a styrofoam plate with a wool rag for about 45 seconds, place the pie pan on top of the plate, and quickly touch the pie pan with your finger.
You will need pliers, a BIC pen, a thumbtack, a pie pan, a styrofoam plate, and hot glue.
Results
After completing the experiment, you will have created an object that can generate sparks with static electricity. It's a fun and unique way to explore the power of electricity!
Why do this project?
This science project is so interesting and unique because it allows you to explore the power of electricity in a fun and creative way.
Also Consider
Experiment variations to consider include using a pencil instead of a BIC pen and using Dad as the discharge object.
