Getting Rid of Dust Mites
Medium
Dust mites are tiny bugs that live off of dead skin cells. They can cause asthma attacks and allergic reactions in people who are allergic to them. This science project will test different methods of getting rid of dust mites.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that washing pillow cases in hot water and drying them in the hot sun is the best method to eradicate dust mites.
Method & Materials
You will need to gather 5 dust mite infected pillow cases, a washing machine, a laundry dryer, tap water, a magnifying glass, a black marker pen, and a ruler. You will then mark a 5cm by 5cm area on each pillow case and count the number of dust mites in the area. The pillow cases will then be subjected to different conditions and the number of dust mites remaining on the pillow case will be counted and recorded.
You will need 5 dust mite infected pillow cases, a washing machine, a laundry dryer, tap water, a magnifying glass, a black marker pen, and a ruler.
Results
The results of the experiment showed that washing pillow cases in hot water and drying them in the hot sun had the least number of dust mites remaining on the pillow case. This proves that the hypothesis is true - washing pillow cases in hot water and drying them in the hot sun is the best method to eradicate dust mites.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting because it shows how different methods of getting rid of dust mites can be tested and compared.
Also Consider
Experiment variations to consider include testing different hot water temperatures and different types of materials like carpet, nylon or cotton.
