Weed Control with Bay Laurel Leaves
Hard
Have you ever wanted to get rid of weeds without using harsh chemicals? In this science project, you'll use Bay Laurel leaves to see if they can help you do just that.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that the higher the concentration of Bay laurel leaf juice, the faster the rate at which weeds are killed.
Method & Materials
You will label 5 pots of weeds and 5 spray bottles with 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. You will then extract juice from Bay laurel leaves and mix it with tap water at different ratios. Finally, you will spray the mixed solution over the weeds in the pot for 12 days and observe the conditions of the weeds.
You will need 5 pots of weeds, 1 kg of Bay laurel leaves, 1 juice extractor, 1 measuring cylinder, 5 spray bottles, tap water, and 1 black marker pen.
Results
The results showed that increasing the concentration of the Bay laurel leaf juice helped kill the weeds more quickly. This proves that the hypothesis was correct.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting because it provides an eco-friendly solution to weed control. It also shows how plants can use allelopathy to compete for resources.
Also Consider
Variations of this science project include repeating it with different types of allelopathic plants, and comparing the difference in effectiveness between natural vs. synthetic weed killers.
