How Temperature Affects Taste
Medium
Ever wonder why some foods taste better when they're hot? Let's find out! In this experiment, we'll explore how temperature affects our ability to taste sweetness.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that as the temperature of the sweetened water is increased, our ability to distinguish between a sweeter and a less sweet liquid is improved.
Method & Materials
You will need to gather 20 male and 20 female participants, 6 jugs, 240 plastic spoons, 40 plastic cups, 1 wooden spatula, 1 packet of sugar, 6 liters of cold drinking water, a thermometer, an oven, a refrigerator, and a small weighing machine. You will then add sugar to the water in the jugs according to the given ratio, put the jugs in the refrigerator, take out the jugs and have the participants taste the samples, and fill in a questionnaire.

Results
The results show that increasing the temperature of the water improves the perception of taste in the participants. This means that if we are able to perceive sweetness better with our tongues when food is warmer, we can then cut down our sugar intake by switching from cold to hot drinks.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting because it explores how temperature affects our ability to taste sweetness. It also provides an opportunity to learn about the different taste buds on our tongues and how they help us to taste our food.
Also Consider
Experiment variations include using salt instead of sugar and exploring the ideal temperature of food for it to be perceived as tasty.
