Yi Ku

Prince Yi Ku (이구, born 29 December 1931, in Tokyo, Japan) is a grandson of Emperor Gojong of the Korean Joseon Dynasty. His father was the Korean prince Yongchin , and his mother the Japanese princess, Masako Nashimoto .

Yi studied at Massachusetts Institute of Technology to became an architect under Professor I.M. Pei. Made stateless by Japan in 1947, Yi acquired US citizenship in 1959 and Korean citizenship in 1964. He married Julia Mullock in 1959.

He currently lives in Tokyo, Japan, and has Japanese citizenship. Although he speaks little Korean, he visits Korea occasionally to participate in ceremonial rites as the Head of the Korean Royal House, although he does so in his capacity as a private citizen, since South Korea is a republic. His status as the head of the Korean Royal House is contested by the supporters of his cousin, Yi Seok.
