Xylose
Xylose is an aldopentose - a simple sugar containing five carbon atoms, and including an aldehyde functional group.
It is found in the embryos of most edible plants.
It is said (on little evidence) to be one of eight sugars which are essential for human nutrition. The others are Galactose, Glucose, Mannose, N-Acetylglucosamine , N-acetylnuraminic acid (sialic acid), Fucose and N-acetylgalacytosamine .
