Washington and Jefferson College
Washington and Jefferson College is a private, coeducational, liberal arts college located in Washington, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1781 and is the oldest institution of higher learning west of the Allegheny Mountains. The college has an enrollment of approximately 1,300 students. It was granted a Phi Beta Kappa chapter in 1913. Distinguished alumni include James G. Blaine, a candidate for President of the United States, Alberto Vilar , a prominent investment banker, and John S. Reed, interim president of the New York Stock Exchange. It competes in intercollegiate athletics at the NCAA Division III level.
Nineteenth-century song writer Stephen Foster is said to have attended W&J but left partway through.
