USS Pompano (SS-491)

USS Pompano (SS-491), a Tench-class submarine, was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named for the pompano , a marine carangoid living in the southern Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico coasts of North America. Her construction by Portsmouth Navy Yard was authorized on 29 August 1944 and her keel was laid down on 16 July 1945, but the contract for her construction was cancelled on August 1945.
