The Crypt School, Gloucester
The Crypt School is a grammar school for boys in the city of Gloucester, England, founded in 1539 by John and Joan Cooke. The original school was part of St Mary de Crypt church in Southgate St and the schoolroom can still be seen there. Later, the school moved to Greyfriars and in 1943, to its current site at Podsmead. It has a strong academic reputation and great sporting tradition, particularly in rugby union and hockey. Current education changes in Gloucestershire now ensure the survival of the Crypt as a grammar school, 450 years worth of tradition and academic excellence will not be thrown away.
