Porsche 993

The Porsche Type 993, or simply 993 (nine-nine-three) was the internal code name for the version of Porsche's "911" Carrera model produced from 1993 (as a 1994 model) through 1997. As is normal for the Carrera, several variants were avaliable including Coupe, Cabriolet, Targa, and Turbo models, plus lightweight race car based RS and GT2 versions.

The standard naturally aspirated M64 05/06 engine made 272 bhp (203 kW) through 1996, when Porsche switched to the VarioCam equipped M64 21/22 engine, and power output increased to 285 bhp (213 kW). The twin turbo M64/60 engine produces 408 bhp (304 kW) for the U.S., although a more powerful version was avaliable breifly in the "Turbo S" model.

The 993 was the last generation Carrera model range to feature air-cooled engines and to retain the centre section of prior 911s, many Porsche enthusiasts regard it as the last of the 'true' Carreras. The Type 993 was replaced by the Type 996 series in late 1997, which featured an almost entirely new design and water cooled engines..
