Newfound Gap

Newfound Gap (elevation 5048 ft/1539 m), is a gap (mountain pass) in the southern Appalachian Mountains in the US. Bordering Tennessee and North Carolina, the middle of the state line runs through the gap, as does U.S. Highway 441, on its way through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is located about a half-hour's drive from both Gatlinburg and Cherokee. The Appalachian Trail also passes across the gap, and the parking lot there is used by many hikers.

In the winter, Newfound Gap often receives heavy snow, much more so than the lower areas surrounding it. Because the National Park Service does not use any deicing chemicals within the national parks, snowplows do all of the work. Being a U.S. highway, the gap is open most of the winter to non-commercial traffic.
