National Socialist Movement
- This article is about the British group - for information about the American political party see National Socialist Movement (US).
The National Socialist Movement is an openly neo-Nazi group operating in the United Kingdom. It splintered from the Combat 18 organisation in 1997. It is thought to have 80+ supporters. Two of its members, Charlie Sargent and Martin Cross , are serving life for murder. Its publications include Column 88, White Dragon and The Order.
Prominent figures include leader Tony Williams , founding member Steve Sargent , and David Myatt, who was its first leader. London Nailbomber David Copeland was a member.
An earlier group of this name was started in 1962 by Colin Jordan on Hitler's birthday. From its inception the Movement was supported by George Lincoln Rockwell and Jordan formed the World Union of National Socialists with the American Nazi Party. The movement also attempted to organise an armed wing, Spearhead, although this was quickly crushed by the government and the NSM was put on hold whilst Jordan and John Tyndall were imprisoned.
The NSM was further weakened in May 1964 when Tyndall split to form the Greater Britain Movement, objecting to the non-British flavour of the NSM, as well as bearing a personal grudge against Jordan and Françoise Dior. As race relations legislation began to kick in Jordan found himself a more and more frequent target for arrest and the NSM collapsed in 1967. The remnants of the NSM were reconstituted as the British Movement in May 1968. The present group is not directly related to the British Movement.
