Currie Cup

The Currie Cup is South Africa's premier domestic rugby competition, featuring the top provinces.

It had its beginnings in 1884 when an inter-town competition was inaugurated, and in 1889 was upgraded to an inter-centre tournament. The then South African Rugby Board donated a silver trophy to be presented to the winners. Western Province became the first winners, and the trophy today stands in the SA Rugby Museum in Cape Town.

The gold trophy was donated by Sir Donald Currie in 1891 before the arrival of the touring British Isles team. It was to be presented to the best-performing local team, which was Griqualand West. They then donated the trophy to the rugby board, and it became the prize for the inter-centre competition. Western Province were the first winners in 1892.
