Banlieue
Banlieue is literally the French word for suburb. However since the 1970s and 1980s the word has taken a negative connotation, that of low income housing projects in which mainly foreign immigrants reside.
Petty crime has since the 1980s increased in France much of it has been blamed on juvenile delinquency . This has resulted in the banlieue being a rather unsafe place to live. These regions normally contain low income public housing and the strips of the cities that they border. As a result of this wave of crime, the National Front, a far right political party led by Jean-Marie Le Pen has risen to prominence during the early 1990s, on a platform of anti-immigration.
The French phrase langue de la banlieue, literally "language of the suburb", is a euphenism the slang currently used by youth in France.
