Ballykissangel is a BBC television drama set in Ireland. The original story revolved around a young English priest as he became part of a rural community. It ran for six series, which were first broadcast on BBC One in the UK from 1996-2001. There was a significant change in the cast between the third and fourth series and to a lesser extent between the fifth and sixth.
The name of the fictional village in which the show was set is derived from Ballykissanne , where the show's creator grew up. However, the show was filmed in Avoca. Ballykissangel is often affectionately called BallyK by its fans.
Father Peter Clifford (Stephen Tompkinson ), a young English priest, arrives in Ballykissangel. Father Mac (Niall Toibin ) is his superior. Assumpta Fitzgerald (Dervla Kirwan), an atheist, owns the local pub.
Brian Quigley (Tony Doyle ) is a local entrepreneur who in the first episode installs a high-tech confessional, complete with fax machine, in the local church. His daughter Niamh (Tina Kellegher ) is going out with Ambrose Egan (Peter Hanly ).
