Ahmed Nazif

Eng. Ahmed Nazif (born 1952) is the Prime Minister of Egypt. Appointed by Hosni Mubarak on 9 July 2004 and sworn in together with 14 new ministers on 14 July 2004. He replaced Atef Obeid who resigned at an emergency Cabinet meeting along with all 34 Cabinet members. Nazif was formerly the Minister for Communications and Information Technology.

Nazif replaced Obeid who had been prime minister for four years.

He has a reputation for being honest and modern, though that reputation will obviously be tested in office. Interestingly, his last name translates literally to clean, so that Arabic speakers hear his name as "Mr. Clean."

During his tenure as Minister for Communications and Information Technology he was credited with establishing Egypt's free internet connectivity plan as well as improving public access to computers through low-price computers sold through the Egyptian telecommunications company, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry for Communications and Information Technology.

He holds a PhD in Computer Engineering from McGill University.

On September 2004, his first major move was major tariff cuts, to comply with the WTO demands.[1]

In January 2005 he backed up Gamal Mubarak for presidency.[2]
