Research

The scientific method consists of many "stages". The first stage is called the "Research" stage. During this stage, you will observe and describe a certain phenomenon or problem. The first thing that you should do at this stage is to select a topic for your project.

A simple example - you may notice during a classroom experiment that winding more coils of wire around an electromagnetic rod makes it more powerful. That might set you thinking about why and how electromagnetism works. You might then ask what else affects an electromagnet's strength? It's clear that since you're asking so many questions about electromagnetism, your topic should therefore be about "electromagnetism".

Another very simple example would be where you notice that some hamburgers are greasier than others. You might start to wonder what causes the difference in the level of greasiness across different types of hamburger meat. In that case, your topic will then be about the "greasiness of hamburger meat", which would fall under the broad category of Food Sciences (which in turn by the way, is a subcategory of Chemistry!).
