Roosters, Hens, and Obstacle Speed

Hard
Roosters, Hens, and Obstacle Speed | Science Fair Projects | STEM Projects
Do roosters reach food faster than hens when an obstacle stands in the way? You time how long it takes roosters and hens to reach a food tray placed four meters from their cage. You test two age groups: one-month-old and six-month-old birds. On the first day, the path is clear. On the second day, you place a three-meter log between the cage and the tray. This reveals how each group handles a physical barrier. Without the log, roosters and hens arrived at nearly the same time. With the log in place, roosters reached the food noticeably faster than hens.

Hypothesis

The hypothesis is that the roosters will get to the feeding tray faster than the hens.

Science Concepts Learned

Animal Locomotion

A physical barrier reveals differences in how animals move to reach a goal. You time roosters and hens from two age groups — one-month-old and six-month-old birds — as they travel four meters from their cage to a food tray. On the first day the path is clear; on the second, a three-meter log stands between the cage and the tray. Without the log, roosters and hens arrive at nearly the same time. With it in place, roosters reach the food noticeably faster than hens, showing how obstacles expose differences in movement.

Method & Materials

You will need three 1 month old roosters, three 1 month old hens, three 6 months old roosters, three 6 months old hens, a bag of chicken feed, an area that is fenced, a feeding tray, a log, two chicken cages, an assistant, and a stopwatch.
You will measure how long it takes for the chickens to reach their food. The distance between the cage and the chicken feed will remain constant.

Results

The results showed that the roosters reached the food tray sooner than the hens. The 6 month old roosters and hens were also faster than the 1 month old chickens.

Why do this project?

This science project is interesting because it compares the competitive nature of roosters and hens. It also shows how domestication of chickens has changed over time.

Also Consider

Consider testing ducks or turkeys instead of chickens. The experiment can also be repeated to compare chickens of different ages.
